“Self-Discovery Through Art”
Welcome, Beautiful Souls.
I’m so excited to share a glimpse into my newest e-book, How to Draw Like You is a creative guide that blends artistic freedom with emotional exploration. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or someone just discovering the healing power of mark-making, this book is for you.
In this post, I want to introduce one of the foundational exercises in the book: The Emotional Line. It’s simple, profound, and deeply revealing.
✏️ The Exercise: Emotional Line
Using a sheet of paper, preferably one without lines, and a standard school grade #2 pencil. Or, any writing utensil of your choice. Do not even consider erasing, just put your hand to paper and allow the line to flow; Draw a line for each of the following emotions:
- Joy
- Anger
- Calm
- Fear
- Love
No need for perfection, just allow your hand to move intuitively. What does each emotion feel like as a line?
Once you’ve drawn each one, take a moment to reflect.
Did any feel hard to express? Were certain emotions easier than others?
If you found any of the emotions difficult to express, pause here. That’s a message worth listening to.
🧠 What Might Emotional Blockages Reveal?
Here are a few gentle interpretations of what your difficulty with expressing an emotion might mean:
Joy
- Fear of letting yourself feel good
- Disconnection from pleasure or the present

Exploring Further: A Gentle Invitation
If you found certain emotions difficult to express through line, please know you’re not alone. These blockages are not signs of failure, they’re invitations. Each hesitation or struggle holds the potential for deeper understanding, healing, and connection with your inner world.
You might take a moment now to breathe, reflect, and gently revisit the emotion(s) that felt the most distant. Approach it like a quiet conversation with your creative spirit, no pressure, just presence.
Try this:
- Choose one emotion that challenged you.
- On a blank page, draw a new line representing that feeling this time, let go of the need to “get it right.”
- Notice what comes up emotionally, physically, or mentally.
- Journal your reflections using prompts like:
“What does this emotion need from me right now?”
“Where have I felt this before?”
“What might happen if I allowed this emotion more space in my life?”
Remember, this practice isn’t about technical skill, it’s about honesty, courage, and compassion through the line. Your mark-making becomes a mirror and a message.
You’re not just learning how to draw like you; you’re learning how to see yourself more clearly, and that is powerful work.
